The Barbie doll was designed by Ruth Handler after watching her daughter Barbara’s make-believe play with paper dolls, dressing them up in variety of outfits and giving them different occupations and scenes to enact. Barbie made her debut at the New York Toy Fair in March 1959 and arrived in Australia in 1962. She was very different to the baby dolls available at the time, which encouraged girls to be mothers.
