Collection of monaural stethoscopes

Made 1850-1960
Fifteen monaural stethoscopes. A stethoscope is an instrument used for listening to sounds within the body. All of the stethoscopes in this collection are simple, trumpet- or cone-shaped instruments, one end of which is applied to the patient's body while the other is held to the practitioner's ear. The details of their shape, size and length, and the materials they are made of, reflect not only particular practitioners' preferences but also the different organs they were used for listening to.
