This silk evening dress and jacket was designed and made by the Spanish born couturier Cristobal Balenciaga in Paris, France in 1954 and was owned and worn by Phyllis Kendall, Sydney socialite and charity worker. The dress demonstrates Balenciaga's skill in sculpting fabric through its elegant and harmonious proportions and balloon silhouette. Outfit, womens, comprising evening dress, jacket, and skirt frill, silk / metal, designed and made by Cristobal Balenciaga, Paris, France, 1954

Physical Description

Evening ensemble consisting of a black silk dress and matching jacket. The strapless dress has a fitted boned bodice swathed across the bust, with a full ballerina length skirt gathered into the waist. The skirt features a full ballooned front panel gathered just below the knee. Dress fastens with a centre back zipper concealed under a cross over panel with hook and eye.

The matching black silk cropped jacket has a V shaped neckline with a cross over front which ties at the waist. The jacket bodice and three quarter length sleeves are cut in one with the underarm gusset to form the shaping. Lined with black silk georgette.

The black silk gathered frill was removed from the skirt hem.
