This gel electrophoresis tank was used at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR) and forms part of a collection of lab equipment typical of those used by virology researchers, many of whom pivoted from their work on other viruses to combat the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic. Westmead Hospital saw the first cases of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) in Australia and researchers at WIMR were involved in early research to model and sequence the new virus.

Physical Description

This tank is an uncoloured transparent plastic container, with a clear green plastic top. It has two electrical diodes on either side with protruding black and red wires.

Marks

'BIO-RAD' stamped clear on black background along with 'criterion' stamped in black on one side of the tank. 'FILL' printed on sticker with black text on both sides of tank. Underneath has BIO-RAD sticker with Model No: CRITERION Cell / Serial No: 135 BR 0016368 / Voltage Limit 600 VDC / Power Limit 15W. BIO-RAD imprinted on top of green lid.
