This item is from a collection of 21 philatelic covers, 5 letters, 2 envelopes and 24 photographs relating to early Australian aviation. It is part of a much larger collection donated to the Museum by EA and VI Crome which comprises some 20,000 items of postage stamps featuring airmail and space philately plus a large number of envelopes flown and posted back to Mr Crome. Many are signed by the pilots or astronauts.

Physical Description

Landscape format black and white photograph depicting a group of people standing in front of a microphone. Some of the men wear military uniforms. At the centre of the group is a boy [John Ulm] shaking hands with the Minister for Defence. Charles Kingsford Smith stands beside the boy. Parts of an aircraft can be seen in the background. The photograph has been signed by those in the photograph. On the back of the photograph is a newspaper cutting of the photograph.

History

Notes

Charles Kingsford Smith sold the aeroplane 'Southern Cross' to the Australian Government. On the 18th of July 1935, Kingsford Smith flew the 'Southern Cross' for the last time from its base at Sydney's Mascot aerodrome to RAAF Richmond for storage.
