In this photograph we see William John MacDonnell sitting next to a 4 ¾-inch telescope installed at the 'Gardenol Observatory'. MacDonnell, a keen amateur astronomer had set up this observatory in the backyard of his home, in Shadforth Street, in the Sydney suburb of Mosman. The photograph was taken on the 15th December, 1907 and shows the observatory telescope, made by Parkes in Birmingham. It had a 72-inch focus and is here fitted with a Thorp solar eyepiece.

Physical Description
