Made
Ernie Dingo's hat has become one of his trademarks, and this Akubra 'Cattleman' signifies his success as a television presenter. He wore it in his travels to many Australian and exotic destinations as a presenter on the Seven Network's 'The Great Outdoors', a travel and lifestyle program that explores activities outside the home, including holidays, dining and culture. Running since 1992, this program has clocked over 600 episodes.

Dark brown Akubra 'Cattleman' hat made of rabbit fur felt. The hat features a plaited leather band, with a small metal buckle on one end, around the outside of the crown. There are three small ventilation holes on each side of crown. A leather band lines the inside rim. Maker's labels attached.

Marks

Inside at top is a white Akubra label with text 'AKUBRA / IMPERIAL / QUALITY / PURE FUR FELT'. A small paper tag with the number '59' is attached to inside band. Stamped on the inside band is the 'Akubra' logo and the text 'Made in Australia' and 'Cattleman'.

The hat was made in Australia by Akubra around 1998.

Akubra carries out the whole production process, from raw skins to finished hats, at Kempsey in NSW.

History

Notes

This hat was worn by Ernie Dingo as a presenter on 'The Great Outdoors' television program as he travelled to many Australian and overseas locations. He lent it to the Powerhouse Museum for display in the exhibition 'On the box: great moments in Australian television' and subsequently donated it to the Museum.
