By the late 1920s newer companies were developing different player piano systems as alternatives to the more established firms with expression systems such as Ampico and Duo-Art that could play music from a roll with the nuances of a pianist using dynamics such as loud and soft. The Cable Piano Company of Chicago developed an expression system that used a second series of holes in the tracker bar which the role ran over. Upright player piano, wood / metal, piano made by Cable Piano Co, mechanism made by Solo Corola, Chicago, Illinois, United States of America, distributed by Suttons, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1927

Upright player piano of 7 1/4 octaves from A in the bass to C in the treble. Iron frame. Brown wooden case with crazed finish. Two large sliding panels in upper front of piano open to reveal spools and unusual tracker bar featuring additional slits as part of Solo system. Maker's name and logo moulded into frame. Serial number above logo. Maker's name, model and Australian agents details on underside of keyboard fall. Sliding doors in lower section open to give access to bellows pedals.
