Photographic print, black & white, glass pub sign for the Balfour Hotel, Sydney, advertising Toohey's Stag Lager, designed by Rousel Studios, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1920s

Painted glass pub sign designed for the Balfour Hotel by Rousel Studios which features a painting of "Desmond", a famous white showjumping horse, clearing a high fence. The text at the top of the sign reads, '"FIRST OVER THE BARS"'. Underneath the picture there is a small panel with the name "DESMOND", then the name of the beer, "STAG/LAGER" in large letters, and finally at the bottom right, the name of "Rousel Studios". This was one of the images designed by Rousel Studios for William Westphal, licensee of the Balfour Hotel on the corner of King and Elizabeth streets, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and represented the Studios' first hotel advertising account.
