This brass firefighting helmet was made in Sydney by Rider and Bell Pty Ltd after 1940. It was typical of those used by New South Wales fire brigades from the late 1800s until 1964.

In colonial NSW, firefighting was undertaken by volunteer brigades whose ability to respond to serious fires could vary. Brass fireman's helmet with inscription 'NSWFB' embossed over centre front.
A brass label attached to underside of the rim reads 'Rider and Bell Makers. Size 7 1/8'.
The helmet has a cockade embossed with fire breathing dragons. It has a short peak at the front and a deeper rim at the back. It has a leather and chain strap. Inside the helmet is lined with leather which can be adjusted with a string tie.
