Womens outfit by Carole Chang

Designed
Created by Carole Chang (Zhang Yiping) for her 1996-97 Autumn-Winter collection, this ensemble is a good example of the interesting and innovative work produced by contemporary Taiwanese fashion designers. Born in 1969, Chang belongs to a group of younger Taiwanese designers, including Hu-Ya-chuan and Stephane Dou Teng-hwang, who received fashion training overseas then returned to Taiwan to establish their own labels. Chang studied fashion in France, at the 'Ecole Bellecour Supemod' from 1990 to 1992, where she believed she would have more creative freedom than in Taiwan. She established her own fashion label, 'Carole Chang', in Taiwan in 1995, and later opened a boutique called Hot Ice. Chang is critical of many Taiwanese women who hide behind international designer-label fashion, and aims to produce clothes that enable women to feel comfortable, confident and express their own personalities.

Physical Description

Clothing ensemble, women's, cotton/synthetic fabrics comprising a drill jacket and trousers, Carole Chang; shoes (pair), Mook, spectacle frame with torch fittings (3 pairs), and belt, Taipei, Taiwan, 1997

Jacket: tailored jacket made of black cotton drill. The jacket has a turn down collar, long sleeves that button with two black plastic buttons and four patch pockets. Two patch pockets with flaps at left and right front breast and two gussetted patch pockets with flaps at left and right front at hip level. Centre front opening fastens with six black plastic buttons. The jacket is machine sewn and unlined.

Trousers: pair of straight legged trousers made of orange and purple silk brocade. There are welt pockets at left and right front hip and the two belt loops at waist. The centre front fly opening fastens with a black nylon zipper and a metal hook and bar. The trousers are machine sewn and unlined.

Belt: narrow belt made of white patent leather with a silver metal buckle.

Shoes: pair of loafers made of black leather with black rubber soles and short heels. Black leatherette inner soles and lining.

Spectacle frames: three pairs of half spectacle frames each with two small battery operated torch fittings attached. They are made of black plastic with silver plastic trim.

Designed by Carole Chang, also known as 'Zhang Yiping' (b 1969), for her Autumn-Winter 1996-7 collection.
