During the 1980s in Sydney’s inner-east, a series of more than 35 parties organised by the Recreational Arts Team (RAT) formed a key element of an emerging subculture. The core of the self-styled Recreational Arts Team was Jac Vidgen, Billy Yip and Reno Dal. Physical Description

Outfit, waistcoat, trousers and braces, cotton / elastic, designed and made by Kathy McKinnon, used by Jac Vidgen and Akira Isogawa at RAT parties, Australia, 1984-1988

Three piece outfit comprising waistcoat, pants and braces.

Pair of loose fitting below knee length trousers made of printed white cotton. The trousers featured black on white optical print, they have two large pockets at the front and centre front fly opening which fastens with a zipper and a purple glittery plastic button. There are more of these purple buttons around the waist for attaching a pair of braces. The trousers are machine sewn and unlined.

Fitted waistcoat made of printed blue denim printed in dark blue with optical print. The waistcoat is machine sewn and unlined.

Pair of braces made of brown and white striped elastic with tan leather components.

Notes

This outfit was designed and made by Australian designer Kathy McKinnon. McKinnon was an important member of Australia's 'Art Clothes' movement in the 1980s and is best remembered for her original screen printed textiles. Her work appeared in the 'Australian Art Clothing' exhibition which travelled to the Commonwealth Arts Festival Edinburgh in 1986.

Worn by Jac Vidgen to a number of RAT parties. Also worn by Akira Isogawa. It was worn with printed tights and a hat. Jac Vidgen put together an extensive archive documenting RAT parties and donated the collection to the Powerhouse Museum and State Library in 2002.
