Silver gelatin dry plate glass negative in landscape format. The image depicts Her Majesty's Theatre and adjoining buildings on the corner of Pitt and Market Streets, Sydney. The five-storey building containing Her Majesty's Theatre, Payten's Hotel and the Australian Banking Company is depicted in the centre of the image. The theatre has a sign on its facade advertising 'A Midsummer Nights Dream'. The intersection of Pitt and Market Streets is depicted in the foreground of the image. The streets are paved and feature kerb and guttering. A building housing The London Chartered Bank is depicted in the foreground on the right side of the image. Electricity poles and cables can be seen in the image including one pole in the foreground on the left side of the image which has a sign inscribed 'Walkover Crossing'. Horse drawn vehicles and pedestrians are depicted throughout the image. The caption, studio mark and studio number are inscribed on the reverse of the negative.
Her Majesty's Theatre was located on the north-east corner of Pitt and Market Streets, Sydney. The theatre was built in the late 1880s and suffered a fire in 1902. The building featured an elaborately arched and colonnaded facade.
The theatre closed in 1933. George Rignold produced A Midsummer night's Dream at Her Majesty's Theatre in 1889.
