These sun goggles were used by Morton Henry Moyes whilst working as meteorologist for Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE), Antarctica, 1911-1914.

The chief objective of the expedition was the exploration and charting of the largely unexplored coastline of Antarctica. This included meteorological and magnetic observations, and the collection of biological and geological samples. Sun goggles (part of protective clothing outfit) (celluloid) / (Bakelite) / velvet / cotton elastic, maker unknown, England, used by Morton Henry Moyes during Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition, Antarctica, 1911-1914

Physical Description

A pair of goggles with two yellow plastic lenses that join across the bridge of the nose with a piece of elastic. There are three holes in either side of each lens and brown felt material around the edge of each lens. The goggles are secured around the head with brown elastic straps that fasten at the back of the head with a metal hook. The length of the strap can be adjusted using a metal buckle.
