History

Notes

Hugo Wertheim (b. Germany, 1854, died Melbourne, 1919) arrived in Australia in 1875 and began by importing sewing machines, bicycles and pianos, and later sold gramophones, records and music in a retail store. In 1909 he established his piano factory in Bendigo Street, Richmond, and championed the use of Australian timbers and design. The firm apparently suffered due to the Great Depression as no mention of it appears after 1938. By then, its premises were at 250 Collins Street, Melbourne.
