Buckle shoe from the Joseph Box collection

This buckle shoe with detachable buckle comes from an important collection of footwear and shoemaking objects thought to have been initiated by the London shoemaker, Robert Dixon Box, and consolidated by his son, Joseph Box and the Box Kingham family during the second half of the 1800s. Physical Description

Buckle shoe, mens, leather / silver braid, with detachable buckle, silver / steel, maker unknown, England, [1761]

Mens single right straight buckle shoe of rand construction with square domed toe and Cuban heel. Upper consists of very high rounded tongue covered by pointed overlapping latchets fastened by an oval silver buckle with silver braid rose stitched to one side. Upper lined with white kid on the sides; white leather sock and insole is brown leather. Heel is red leather; white stitched at breast, seat and top piece and leather sole features a sueded waist.

Silver buckle with a pitchfork chape of steel, featuring florette in the centre of each side and one in each corner. Also features an Edinburgh hallmark.

Marks

The number '9' has been written on the sole of the shoe and there are two paper labels stuck to the sole of the shoe. Text in pencil on one label reads '1412 / Dress'. Pencil text on the other label reads 'Kingham / 187 Regent / St / London'.
