This pair of silk brocade tie shoes featured in the Bethnal Green Museum Shoe Exhibition held in London, England in 1897. The shoes come from an important collection of footwear and shoemaking objects thought to have been initiated by the London shoemaker, Robert Dixon Box, and consolidated by his son, Joseph Box and the Box Kingham family during the second half of the 1800s. Tie shoes, pair, womens, silk brocade / braid / silk / linen / leather, maker unknown, England, 1700-1710

Womens pair of straight tie shoes of white rand construction with needlepoint upcurved toes and covered Louis heels. Shoes consist of red and cream silk brocade uppers with high vandyked tongue covered by pointed latchets with small open sides and tied by modern red braid with oblique side seams all bound in red silk. Uppers decorated with silver braid trim to cover cuts to centre fronts when shoes have been enlarged after manufacture. Shoes lined with blue silk, linen and white kid and the insole is brown leather with heels covered in red Morocco.
