Tabbed shoe from the Joseph Box collection

This tabbed shoe was made for the Duchess of Richmond in England, possibly for Queen Victoria's wedding, Coronation or another court occasion. The shoe comes from an important collection of footwear and shoemaking objects thought to have been initiated by the London shoemaker, Robert Dixon Box, and consolidated by his son, Joseph Box and the Box Kingham family during the second half of the 1800s. Tabbed shoe, womens, silk satin / leather / brass, maker unknown, made for the Duchess of Richmond, England, 1835-1845

A single straight unworn womens tabbed slip on shoe or slipper of turnshoe construction with shallow square toe and covered right angle Louis heel. Shoe consists of black silk satin upper with a square tabbed front, oblique side seams with two rows of stitching, no back seam and the top edge bound. Upper is decorated with 7 rows of ribbon stitched parallel to the toe on the vamp and is lined with linen and white kid and the sock is linen. Heel is covered with red Morocco leather with 3 brass nails on the top piece and sole is leather and very narrow.

Inscribed in ink on quarters, now illegible due to fading, (from 1965 list) 'Her Grace the Duchess of Richmond'
