Reputed to have been made for the Duchess of Sutherland by Henry Marshall, this pair of slip on shoes comes from an important collection of footwear and shoemaking objects thought to have been initiated by the London shoemaker, Robert Dixon Box, and consolidated by his son, Joseph Box and the Box Kingham family during the second half of the 1800s. Physical Description

Slip on shoes, pair, womens, satin / leather / elastic / metal / paste, made by Henry Marshall [for] Pattison Bootmaker, London, England, [post 1864]

Pair of womens slip on shoes of turnshoe construction with round toe and covered Cuban heel. Shoes consist originally of cream silk uppers (now brown) top edge bound and featuring a thick elasticised strap across the instep. Strap decorated with cream silk three tiered bow and vamp with a cream silk rosette. Both feature a paste metal buckle stitched to the top. Uppers lined in cotton and kid with a kid sock and heel covered in cream silk with leather heel breast and the sole in tan leather.

Manufacturer on sock of both shoes, pasted, printed arch shaped paper label, 'BY APPOINTMENT TO HER MAJESTY' surmounts a coat of arms and illegible Latin text, 'HENRY MARSHALL / LATE / PATTISON / BOOTMAKER, / HRH Duchess of Edinburgh / HRH Princess Louis of Hess / HRH Princess Christian / 94 Oxford Street / London', numbers on right quarter lining of both shoes, text in ink, on right shoe , '11b', on left shoe, '[B9]00'
