This pair of slip on shoes was made, possibly as fancy dress for the Eglinton Tournament, 1839, a medieval joust and revel held in Scotland by Archibald William Montgomerie, thirteenth Earl of Eglinton (1812-1861) in honour of Queen Victoria's coronation. The shoes come from an important collection of footwear and shoemaking objects thought to have been initiated by the London shoemaker, Robert Dixon Box, and consolidated by his son, Joseph Box and the Box Kingham family during the second half …

Slip on shoes, pair, womens, silk brocade / leather / brass, made by Gundry & Sons, London, England, c1839

Pair of womens slip on shoes of turnshoe construction with pointed toes and stacked heels with 3 lifts. Shoes consist of ivory and gold silk brocade uppers in a diamond pattern with square throat, oblique side seams, back seam and bound top edge, lined with linen and kid. Uppers are decorated with a silk bow at the throat and leather heels are edged with brass nails. The shoes are an imitation medieval style, possibly for fancy dress.
