This slip on shoe comes from an important collection of footwear and shoemaking objects thought to have been initiated by the London shoemaker, Robert Dixon Box, and consolidated by his son, Joseph Box and the Box Kingham family during the second half of the 1800s. Physical Description

Slip on shoes, pair, womens, leather / cotton, made for Taylor's Warehouse, England, 1810-1815

Womens pair of straight slip on shoes for [indoor] wear of turnshoe construction with finger tip toes and covered wedge (spring) heels. Shoes consist of faded maroon uppers with red bound drawstring top edge and red bound oblique side seams and back seam. Shoes were originally open at the centre front with two rows of lace holes; later infilled. A red bow and a row of ruching covers the original lacing. Vamps are lined with white cotton and the quarters with white kid. The linen sock of one shoe is missing revealing tan insole underneath and the red leather heel is white stitched above the sole.
