This pair of slip on shoes comes from an important collection of footwear and shoemaking objects thought to have been initiated by the London shoemaker, Robert Dixon Box, and consolidated by his son, Joseph Box and the Box Kingham family during the second half of the 1800s. Physical Description

Slip on shoes, pair, leather, England, maker unknown, 1780-1810

Womens pair of straight slip on shoes for outdoor wear of turnshoe construction, mass produced, with needlepoint toes, slight toe spring and covered wedge heel. Shoes consist of black Morocco leather uppers with short vamp, oblique turned side seams and back seams with leather top edge binding. Uppers are lined in linen with a linen sock pasted over a leather insole. The heels are inserted above the sole and may have been added later.

Two identification tags on outsole, pasted, round with serrated edges, handwritten text in pencil, 'King[horn] / 187 Regent / (illeg. faded) / London', '(illeg. faded)', written over the top '12' within a circle
