This item is from a collection of 21 philatelic covers, 5 letters, 2 envelopes and 24 photographs relating to early Australian aviation. It is part of a much larger collection donated to the Museum by EA and VI Crome which comprises some 20,000 items of postage stamps featuring airmail and space philately plus a large number of envelopes flown and posted back to Mr Crome. Many are signed by the pilots or astronauts.

Philatelic cover, 30th anniversary of Kingsford Smith flight, signed, paper, stamp designed by James E Lyle, 1958

Physical Description

Envelope with signatures written in blue pen surrounding a stamp and silver label. The stamp commemorates the 30th anniversary of the first Tasman flight in 1928 and depicts Charles Kingsford Smith and his plane the 'Southern Cross'. The silver label shows a map of the world and the routes flown by Kingsford Smith. The postmark is from GPO Sydney and dated 27 August 1958. The signatures include John Stannage, G U Allan, John Percival, H A Litchfield, T H McWilliam, John Ulm and P G Taylor. There is a notation from the donor on the back of the envelope.
