History

Notes

This model was made by Robert E. Klippel , one of Australia's best sculptors, and the painted plaster seascape by John Alcot ,a well known marine artist. Klippel was serving on the HMAS "Bombo" as a seaman when he built the model.
The 540 ton SS "Bombo" was built in 1929 by H. Robb at Leith ,Scotland for NSW State Metal Quarries to carry blue metal from the Bombo quarry between Kiama and Sydney. After arriving in Australian waters in 1930, she averaged 5 round trips weekly. During WW11,the ship was requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy and commissioned in 1941 as an auxiliary minesweeper ,carrying 2 Oerlikon heavy machine guns, 4 depth charges at her stern, and a 12 pounder on the foredeck. The "Bombo" was on of 2 minesweepers working out of Hobart, sweeping from Hobart to Port Arthur. From 1943-45 ,she operated variously from Sydney, Hobart and Northern Australia, , having been converted to a general stores carrier in 1944. The "Bombo" was in Timor when the Japanese surrendered in September 1945.
After the war, the " Bombo" resumed the blue metal quarry run Kiama to Sydney without incident other than once grounding on the Kiama bar in Decenber 1948. The ship was known to have a consistent list to port in heavy seas. In February 1949, she left Kiama for Sydney in heavy seas, the blue metal load shifted and she took on a 5 degree list to port. The captain decided to run for Port Kembla harbour but the list suddenly increased to 30 degrees ,and shortly after the ship turned turtle and sank. 4 of the crew of 14 were lost. The wreck of the " Bombo" is now a well known dive site about 8 km. off Port Kembla.
