Commemorative spoon, Australasian Federation League

Designed to promote Australia's Federation movement, this silver spoon belongs to the collection of silver and EPNS (electroplated nickel silver) tableware, trophies, napkin rings and spoons made and/or used in Australia mostly between the 1890s and 1950s. Presented to the Powerhouse Museum in 2002, the collection was assembled in the 1980s and 1990s by Dr G W Kenneth Cavill, an Emeritus Professor of the University of New South Wales. Commemorative spoon, Australasian Federation League, sterling silver / gilt / enamel, made by Walker and Hall, England, c 1899

Physical Description

A small King's pattern silver gilt spoon with oval bowl and cast reeded and ribbon-bound stem. Top of stem applied with a triangular, blue-enamelled shield showing the Federation flag in the centre and four gilt scrolls containing the inscription 'ONE PEOPLE ONE DESTINY ONE FLAG' (slogan of the Australasian Federation League). Maker's marks stamped on back.

Inscription on enamelled section attached to finial: 'ONE PEOPLE / ONE DESTINY / ONE / FLAG'.

Stamped on back of stem: 'RoNo346138'.

Stamped marks on back of finial of a crown, lion, Gothic-style 'g', and flag with 'W&H'.
