Womens evening outfit by Sun Jian Fashion Studio

Sun Jian is a significant contemporary fashion designer based in China. She was born during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), a time when women wore blue and grey trouser suits and to look fashionable was considered a sign of spiritual corruption and bourgeois tendencies. Physical Description

Outfit, womens, comprising evening dress ornamented with diamantes, sandals and artificial flower corsage, designed by Sun Jian for Sun Jian Fashion Studio, Beijing, China, 1996.

Evening dress: close fitting, full length womens evening dress made of black and silver nylon/cotton stretch knit fabric with an all over lozenge design which is decorated with crystal diamentes. The sleeveless dress has a high neckline and a short train at centre back. The armholes, neck and hem are all trimmed with black satin. The centre back opening fastens with a black nylon invisible zipper. The dress is machine sewn and unlined.

Sandals: pair of womens sandals made of black fabric covered vinyl. The sandals have a squared off open toe with two wide straps over the top of the foot. There is a further strap that fits around the back of the heel to fasten on the outside foot with a heavy silver buckle. The medium sized heel is covered with black fabric and has a black rubber sole. The sandals have biege vinyl soles, white vinyl lining and innersoles.

Corsage: long corsage made up of deep burgundy silk roses attached to wire stems covered with green paper. The roses are bunched with green plastic foliage and wired around the stems. The stems are further secured with clear sticky tape.


Dress: none. Shoes: white fabric label on innersoles 'ATT/Chinese text', printed on gold on soles 'AU/STYLED IN U.S.A.', 'ATT/ATT SHOES CO. LTD./FASHION/OF TAIWAN/36 1/2 '.



Designed by Sun Jian as part of the 1996 collection titled 'Approaching 1997' for her fashion label Sun Jian Fashion Studio, established in 1992.

Manufactured in 1996 by the fashion label Sun Jian Fashion Studio which was established by Sun Jian in 1992.

This outfit was made in 1996.



This ensemble formed part of the 1996 collection titled 'Approaching 1997' first paraded in a show held with fellow designer Guo Pei at the International Hotel in Peking (Beijing) in April 1996 as part of Fashion Week.
