Porcelain bowl by Lucie Rie

Made
This porcelain bowl with a brown oxide glaze was made in London in 1962 by Lucie Rie, an influential modernist potter. Born and trained in Vienna, Austria, Lucie Rie went to London in 1938 and set up a pottery studio at Albion Mews, Paddington, in which she worked from 1946 with Hans Coper, until her death in 1995. Her simple, precisely thrown and decorated 'urbane' pottery challenged the dominant philosophy of Bernard Leach. Rie introduced modernism to British pottery.
